The result -- for those who can't or don't feel like watching the video below -- while all the products did a decent job of lifting up the pet hair,... Continue reading →

Whether or not it will last, 3D is still a growing trend at the movies and with TV manufacturers. However, a new survey shows that most people won't buy a 3D TV just because they have to wear the required glasses. According to the Nielson survey, 57% of respondents named the clunky specs as the main reason they wouldn't purchase a 3D set for their home. And 90% of those surveyed said that the glasses would be an impediment to being able to multitask. We imagine it must be difficult to watch a golf tournament in 3D while trying to... Continue reading →

I received a new driver's license in the mail, but I did not receive my registration renewal forms by the time it had expired.
Unless you've been only been paying attention to the 24/7 Big Brother live feeds this summer, you've probably heard about that tiny little recall of 380 million eggs because of potential salmonella poisoning. Now the Wall Street Journal reports that USDA graders noticed problems at the source facility earlier this year but opted to wait until FDA inspectors figured things out for themselves in August. The Journal has seen daily sanitation reports filed by USDA graders from the months leading up to the recall. The newspaper says that the generally satisfactory reports took a turn for the worse in mid-May... Continue reading →

Here's how the designer describes the seat: For flights anywhere from one to possibly even up to three hours ... this would be comfortable seating... The seat ... is like a saddle.
Parents will gladly pay extra for baby shampoo that won't sting their little ones' eyes or send them to the hospital when they inevitably gulp some of it, but Target is stretching the boundaries beyond reason with this out-of-control markup for this product. While this is obviously a pricing error, it's also a simulation of what the actual price of baby soap looks like to a single parent raising a child on minimum wage. Now the regulators are going after five manufacturers of electronic cigarettes for what the FDA alleges are illegal marketing tactics. For those not aware of e-cigarettes, they are little battery-powered sticks that look like cigarettes but provide the user with vaporized nicotine instead of tobacco smoke. What has the FDA riled up are claims made by ads for e-cigarettes that say e-cigarettes can curb or cure nicotine addiction. And according... Continue reading →

Starting Jan. 5, most stores will be banned from using plastic bags and people will be charged an extra dollar for every transaction in which they use plastic bags. "We want to have a beautiful city," said a city Commissioner. "We want to make sure that we take care of the environment." Not all businesses will be forbidden from using plastic bags. Dry cleaners are among the short list of store types that will be exempted from the new rule.
Jared spotted this dubious deal at his local Walmart. You can get a bottle of Old Spice high endurance body wash for $2.97, or the two-pack for $6.47. There should be a bulk discount, right? Nope, you'll actually pay $.53 more if you buy the bundle instead of the two individually. Hey, that plastic wrap is really, um, convenient, and there's a convenience premium. Yeah, that's the ticket. But looking closely at the rollback sign, you can see that the individual ones were once $3.50. So the singles are on sale, but the doubles are not. Which is why it... Continue reading →

The dishes are the most overpriced on the menu relative to their ingredients' cost, and are often the least interesting. * "Vegetarian" and "vegan" are open to interpretation. Wrong, says Arthur Sulzberger Jr., the New York Times chairman and publisher. "We will stop printing the New York Times sometime in the future, date TBD," Sulzberger told an international newsroom summit in London in an article on Deadline. The major corporations our lives are intertwined with often don't want to let us go--or create unneeded problems for our survivors. Dan's father recently died, and he wrote up a comparison of his family's experiences with a variety of large companies. Out of Bank of America, American Express, Fidelity, AT&T Wireless, and Comcast, which companies do you think were the easiest to deal with under the circumstances? I wanted to share with you a few contrasting stories about how different companies handled my father's recent death.
