How to avoid the YANL scam: THINK & TOSS!

May 4th, 2008 · No Comments · Public Interest

Welcome! Check our resources and learn ways to recognise and combat or avoid being ripped off by email scams, web scams, mail scams, politicians who are interested only in lining their own pockets, bank overcharges and crazy fees and a lot more.

Here’s a very recent email.

See if you can spot some of the clues that tip one off to the fact that this is a crude attempt at Yet Another Nigerian Letter (YANL) Scam.

THINK!
Hint: Is it Fedex Courier Servic or FEDEX or Fedex Express Delivery?

Hint: Mr.Ahmed Zafa,

Hint: rev dr ugo odili or REV DR UGO ODILI

Hint: email addresses ending in cz and fr (They are two different countries and neither is Benin!)

Hint: Any others you can spot? I see several beginning with the fact that this email is addressed to someone else. I am certainly not the “Dear” to whom he would entrust even a wooden Rand, Yen, Euro, Buck or Loonie.

If you must fall for this scam, try asking him to send you cash in a double sealed envelope first to test his good faith

(Hey: he claims to have faith in you, the unnamed ‘Dear”. Why shouldn’t you ask him to earn your trust and faith in return before you send him any information- after all, who is he?),

Better yet: Label this as “Spam”, that’s what it is, and TOSS it and all like it into your trash bin.
