The Consumerist (02.02.2010 23:34h): Spirit Airlines Releases Another Naughty Sounding Promo
Last year Spirit Airlines had something called a M.I.L.F. Sale. They played it off as an accident, but I don't think anyone believed them. Now they're at it again, this time with an otherwise generic online ad that "accidentally" puts the word "muff" next to the word "diving." Hmm, maybe that customer service number that really directed callers to a phone sex line wasn't an accident, either. I bet if you fly Spirit Airlines and ask the flight attendants for some salted nuts, they burst into shameful giggles and run off. "MUFF Diving is the New Alternative to Air Travel" ... [

The Consumerist (02.02.2010 22:41h): We Are Too Poor For Fancy Alcohol
The numbers are in for liquor sales in 2009, and last year had the smallest increase in sales since 2001, reports Bloomberg. What's worse if you own a high-end liquor company , sales shifted toward the products on the cheaper end of the spectrum, and people bought less at restaurants and other public places. But we're not actually drinking less, it turns out--we're just doing more entertaining at home. "Liquor Sales Stagnate as U.S. Consumers Turn to Cheaper Drinks" [BusinessWeek] [

The Consumerist (02.02.2010 21:41h): Ellen Can't Open The Make-Up She Endorses
A viewer recently wrote to Ellen DeGeneres asking if she'd ever tried to open the Cover Girl Simply Ageless foundation that she endorses. The answer, it seems, is no. We're going to give her the benefit of the doubt picking on Ellen seems wrong, somehow and assume that she has actually used the product before, but it's still sort of odd that she can't open it. Also, apparently the container is so hard to open that there are actually instructions on Cover Girl's website, and an 800 number to call if you still can't get it open. [

It probably hasn't occurred to you that each year there are nearly 26,000 people treated in emergency rooms for injuries sustained by tipping furniture and TVs. It certainly hadn't occurred to us. Our sister-publication, Consumer Reports, put together a video demonstration showing how your kid can get crushed climbing up a dresser towards your TV. Yes, this actually happens. In recent years 87 kids have died from falling televisions. The fix? Secure your furniture to the wall. [

The Consumerist (02.02.2010 19:48h): There Is No Power On Earth That Can Correct An Error At Comcast
Meet Stacy. Stacy moved into a new apartment. The person who moved out of the apartment had Comcast. Her neighbors all have Comcast. Stacy, however, cannot have Comcast. Why? A clerical error. And another one. And after that, still another. Stacy says: On December 1st, 2009, my boyfriend and I moved into a new apartment in Chicago. Since December 2nd, we have been unsuccessfully attempting to get cable and internet service through Comcast. Where we live, Comcast and DirectTV are our only options, and we prefer cable. If your home mortgage was serviced by the defunct Ameriquest or its affiliates, you could stand to receive payouts starting at $1,000. Just enter your loan number on the settlement website and it will tell you if you're eligible. The $325 million settlement came after a multi-state investigation which found shady lending practices that failing to disclose that loans had adjustable rates, failing to disclose the terms of the loan, refinancing homeowners into inappropriate loans, inflating home appraisals, and charging excessive fees. The Consumerist (02.02.2010 17:54h): NFL Claims To Own "Who Dat," Pisses Off New Orleans
In a stunning display of bipartisanship the entire state of Louisiana has successfully told the NFL where to stick its attempts to prevent local merchants from selling t-shirts with the phrase "Who Dat" a popular Saints cheer and the fleur-de-lis . Last week the WSJ reported that the NFL had issued cease-and-desist orders against vendors in New Orleans who were selling products with the wording. The league claimed that using the phrase is likely to "confuse the purchasing public into believing that your items" are sponsored by the NFL. The phrase and the fleur-de-lis, naturally predates the NFL. Louisiana Senator, ... [

A shopper just told us that last night at a Best Buy in NYC, she was taken to a back room, then cuffed by police officers and taken to a precinct for "further investigation," because she tried to pay with an American Express gift card her father had bought for her. The Consumerist (02.02.2010 15:38h): "Move Your Money" Profiled On NPR
Last month, the Huffington Post launched a campaign called Move Your Money that urged people to support community banks. The idea is that by moving your money to a community bank, you can help put the "too big to fail" banks on a diet so that they get smaller, while at the same time help a local bank remain competitive. The NPR program All Things Considered took a look at the campaign over the weekend, and talked to some experts about whether it's worth making the switch. First, all "movement" talk aside, there are a couple of immediate benefits of ... [

The Consumerist (02.02.2010 15:30h): WSJ Says Burger King Is Hurting Because Addicts Have Abandoned It
Burger King has suffered two consecutive quarters of declining sales, and a Wall Street Journal says the drop is due to hard-core "super fan" Burger King eaters shying away from the chain in favor of, gulp, possibly healthier choices. A vignette about reformed super fan Noah, from the WSJ story: The 28-year-old Seattle man used to wolf down bacon cheeseburgers three or four nights a week at Burger King, Jack in the Box and local bars. But he and his fiancee started cutting back last year after both were laid off, then found jobs at lower pay. Now they cook ... [

The Consumerist (02.02.2010 15:00h): Newegg's Gift Card Policy Frustrates Pedro
Things were looking up for Pedro. Not only have most people forgotten Napoleon Dynamite and thus stopped taking his name in vain in catch-phrase-employing jokes, but he had a Newegg gift card loaded with the exact amount of a pre-order-only item he wanted. Life was swell right until he was about to check out and discovered Newegg doesn't let you use gift cards on pre-orders. He writes: If you need another reason to hate gift cards, Newegg doesn't accept them for pre-orders, back-orders, and cell phone orders. That's fantastic, especially since the only thing I want is a limited edition ... [

CBS told EA it can go to hell rather than use the "provocative" slogan for its upcoming game Dante's Inferno on a Super Bowl commercial, AdAge reports. The game's ad will instead inform viewers "Hell Awaits." From the AdAge story: The company, which is making its Super Bowl debut, had to soften the tagline in order to get clearance from CBS. The network determined the "Go to hell" tag was too controversial for the broadcast. "It was deemed too provocative," said Paulo Ribeiro, account director at Wieden, Portland, Ore. The Consumerist (02.02.2010 13:30h): How The IRS Picks Its Audit Targets
The IRS doesn't just draw potential audit victims out of a hat. There is actually a method to its cruel madness, as outlined in this 2006 IRS.gov post spotted by Jim Wang of Bargaineering. Wang highlighted four of the chief audit-hunting processes: * Computer Scoring - I listed this one first because it’s the most interesting of the four reasons. Tax returns are “scored” using two systems - Discriminant Function System DIF and Unreported Income DIF UIDIF . The Discriminant Information Function System DIF score gives the IRS an indication of the potential for change in tax due, based on ... [

The Consumerist (02.02.2010 13:03h): Walmart And Best Buy Bail From Video Game Trade-in Market
Best Buy and Walmart have backed off on their challenges to GameStop's used game racket, both shelving their short-lived tests of trade-in kiosks, Industry Gamers reports: The used game kiosks were provided by a company called E-play. Today, however, E-play suspended its operations, and consequently, both of the big box retailers have decided not to bother with the used business for now. Analysts have repeatedly stated that the used games test at retailers like Wal-mart would basically have zero impact on GameStop. Gamers, how do you dispose of your old video games?
