The Consumerist (01.02.2010 22:09h): Why Won't Time Warner Fix The "Old, Overtaxed" Wiring In This Neighborhood?
Alex from Rochester, NY, says every year around this time his Road Runner high speed access slows to a crawl, and stays that way until April. It occasionally happens at other times throughout the year, too. Unfortunately, Time Warner won't fix the problem. Alex says one technician who came out to look at the issue told him, "The wires were installed when Adelphia provided service, and they haven't been upgraded since." Another one told him, "The problem has been going on for years, and management knows about it, but enough people don't complain." Alex writes, "Well, please note this as ... [

The Consumerist (01.02.2010 21:50h): Road Runner Rep Acts All Weird About Request For Upload/Download Speeds
Richard sent us this screen capture of a chat he says he recently had with a Roadrunner CSR. I can't figure out why the CSR would withhold bandwidth stats from a customer, nor why she would capitulate so quickly when Richard asks for her supervisor. Maybe that's one mean supervisor. [

The Consumerist (01.02.2010 21:26h): Help! My W-2 Is Late And I Want Justice!
Tax Cat here. Reader Jason wants to know what to do when your lazy former employer doesn't send your W-2 on time. Jason says: Hoping you can help answer a question that I think a lot of your readers will find useful: What do I do if I don't get my W-2 on time? My girlfriend was laid off last spring, and has not yet received her W-2 from her former employer. I know they have two more days to get it here, but this company has repeatedly demonstrated its ineptitude and we don't anticipate the form arriving. Short of ... [

The Consumerist (01.02.2010 21:08h): Six e-Readers Compared
If you're thinking of buying a digital reader in the next six months and you're wondering what device to get, here's a handy chart that compares six of the most highly publicized models side by side. As you might guess, bigger screens and more flexibility with file formats means higher prices. Also, the iPad is sort of a misfit here as it's the only device that's not a dedicated ebook reader. It's also likely that the feature set on several of these models may change in the coming months, but PaidContent.org says it will update the chart as needed. "How ... [

The Consumerist (01.02.2010 20:52h): American Airlines Threatens To Move You Down On The Stand-By List If You Complain
Reader Kelsea's flight was delayed getting to O'Hare and when she got there for her connection to LA she encountered rudeness and general crappy service from American Airlines. One of the employees even went so far as to suggest she not request to be moved up the stand-by list because they would probably move her down "out of frustration." Hey, that may be true but you probably shouldn't tell the customers you're going to try to spite them. Don't worry though, the story has a happy ending. Kelsea writes to American Airlines : To Whom It May Concern: On Wednesday, ... [

The Consumerist (01.02.2010 20:34h): Bank Of America Took Customer's Name Off CD, Won't Give Her Access Now
V. and her parents are having a heck of a time cashing in the certificate of deposit they opened jointly. She says it just matured, but she's in Canada she doesn't say where her parents are and they gave power of attorney to another party. BofA won't deal at all with this other person, but what's worse, V. says they've taken her name off the account entirely. Here's her story. I have a CD account with Bank of America. This is a joint account with me and my parents. Now, both I and my parents have been denied access to ... [

(01.02.2010 20:15h): A Word of Warning about your Donation to Charity
Many of us have seen the heart-wrenching scenes from the world’s latest natural disaster, in Haiti, and want to help.Unfortunately, there are some who would take advantage of the situation, and people’s charitable nature, and put fraudulent requests for money online. As Linda McGlasson over at the Bank Info Security blog said ‘there Is a special place in hell’ for people like this. Let’s hope so, because the sad, awful truth of it is that Symantec is reporting this morning that they have already seen spam fraudulently claiming to be from the Red Cross, soliciting donations for Haitian Earthquake relief ... Rip Torn, who plays the fictional CEO of GE on 30 Rock, was arrested after being found drunk and armed in a bank in his hometown. He has pleaded not guilty, says the New York Post. This sort of behavior is apparently not altogether unexpected. From the NYP: Torn, 78, was armed with a loaded gun when he broke a window and entered the Litchfield Bancorp in Salisbury on Friday, officials said. The actor was so drunk he had no idea he was in a bank, the sources said. Bank President Mark Macomber told TMZ.com that no one was in ... [

The Consumerist (01.02.2010 19:00h): Why Aren't You Haggling Yet?
Michael S. Rosenwald saved $15 on a pair of shoes at Macy's, $3 on a steak at Giant, $6 on a DVD set at Best Buy, and $100 off his next Verizon bill plus a 10% discount on future bills during one week spent haggling. In this Washington Post article, he describes how it felt to switch from the habit of paying full retail to looking at a price tag as a "suggestion," in the words of one expert he met with. The executives Rosenwald spoke with repeatedly said that bargaining is not standard practice, but that didn't stop employees ... [

The Consumerist (01.02.2010 18:44h): Epic Toyota Cluster#$@% Continues: Repair Kits Shipping To Dealers
2.3 million Toyotas will need to be repaired and the kits to do so are being shipped to dealers this week, says Bloomberg. The repair should take about 30 minutes and Toyota says they are "confident" the problem isn't electronic. From Bloomberg: Pedal assemblies in models that were recalled have a gap that the steel plate is designed to fill, Hanson said. The new piece relieves friction that can develop in some pedals as a result of wear and tear and condensation, and allows the pedal to spring back without sticking, he said. If you have one of these cars, ... [

The Consumerist (01.02.2010 18:00h): South Butt Rebuts North Face
"South Butt," sued by North Face for trademark infringement, has filed a delightfully nyah-nyah answer to the apparel maker's legal claims. While North Face asserts that South Butt is sewing confusion and mistake among consumers, and deceiving them, the parody company, intent on a 1st Amendment defense, insists that that "the consuming public is well aware of the difference between a face and a butt." Catastrophegirl says Ziploc has made its bags thinner, smaller and generally less useful in an apparent attempt to cut down on materials costs. She writes: I went to make portion sizes out of a large cut of meat tonight and finished off a box of Ziploc sandwich sized bags that I purchased in a bulk package [Sam's Club.] It's been a few months since I bought the package. The Consumerist (01.02.2010 13:00h): Beware Online Discounts That Vanish As You Check Out
Omie Ismail at LiveCheap warns online shoppers to look out for discounts that disappear before you finalize purchases. He writes about how he visited GNC and applied a discount that didn't go through. He wouldn't have noticed unless he had gone line by line through the order. He writes: the problem is that the $39.99 Gold Card Savings that is itemized is never reflected in the Estimated Total and when you check out, it disappears entirely. If you do the math according to the cart it should be $114.98 per the coupon it should be $126.98 since it is 20% ... [
